Creating a Winter Wonderland

“A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight. Walking in a winter wonderland.”

~ Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith

The coldest months of the year are drawing near, and it’s truly a magical time. Winter appeals to all of our senses: As we experience the smells and tastes of our favorite cold-weather foods and beverages; while we take in the sights and sounds of holiday light displays and music; and as we feel the simple joy of wearing warm sweaters, wrapping up in warm blankets, or sitting before a fireplace.

As you can see, this season offers an abundance of inspiration for a festive, winter-themed party. It’s a perfect opportunity to embrace the season – and everything it has to offer – with a Winter Wonderland theme.

We’ve rounded up a few ideas to help you plan your perfect winter-themed party.  You can borrow these or create your own Winter Wonderland theme. There is so much you can do with the bountiful gifts that winter has to offer – and so many ways you can use them to thrill (and chill) your party guests!

For a cozy and romantic Winter Wonderland

A snug and intimate winter-themed party

Many of us are perfectly happy spending those cold winter months bundled up and staying warm. Appeal to your guests’ desire for coziness and winter romance with these suggestions.

Menu: Soups, stews and chowders; or “comfort” foods, such as macaroni and cheese.

Drinks: Winter lagers, red wines, and warm cocktails. You can refer back to our article from last week for some warm holiday inspired beverage ideas, too.

Décor: Warm colors, such as deep reds, browns and purples create warm and romantic atmospheres. Consider using candles or votives as centerpieces, as well as throughout your party’s venue for a romantic feel.

For a wintry and snowy Winter Wonderland

A snow globe winter-themed party

Remember how much fun you had as a kid, shaking snow globes and watching it “snow” inside them? Now you can bring some of that whimsical, snowy fun to your indoor venue, too.

Menu: Hearty, warm foods; desserts such as snowflake-shaped cookies, white cupcakes or a white cake with blue frosting or blue and silver sprinkles. Spread candy canes around the desserts for an extra splash of color.

Drinks: White wine, dessert wine and holiday cocktails.

Décor: Let it snow! Artificial snow, that is. Using the “snow” to cover windows, plants, benches, light posts, or other outdoor fixtures helps create an indoor Winter Wonderland. You may also consider purchasing holiday lights sets with white and/or lights, including those which simulate falling snow, to complete the look.

Additional suggestions for your winter-themed party

Music

Enhance your Winter Wonderland theme with seasonal and festive music. Your guests may especially enjoy Holiday songs if your party falls around the December holidays. Consider adding some of these fun classics to the mix:

  • “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee
  • “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” by Dean Martin
  • “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank Sinatra
  • “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt
  • And, of course, “Winter Wonderland” by the artist of your choice

Decorations

You can easily find the perfect decorations and holiday lights for your winter-themed party at any local store that sells party supplies and/or crafts. And don’t be afraid of over-doing it! Remember, you want to “wow” your guests and make them feel like they really are in a Winter Wonderland.

In her article, “Winter Wonderland Theme Party,” event planner Cheryl Cirelli suggests the following for creating a wintry atmosphere:

  • Faux snow, placed on a fireplace mantel or on end tables
  • Faux evergreen branches, holly, and berries, set on tables and near doorways
  • Snowmen, penguins, polar bears and other winter figurines placed throughout the party area
  • Skis, snowboards and ice skates, leaned up against walls

Which type of Winter Wonderland sounds best to you? We think they all sound fun, and we’re really looking forward to all the good times winter has to offer.
