6 Ideas for a Customized Wedding Shower

Without a doubt, brides-to-be have a lot on their plates as they prepare for their big day.

When it comes down to it, a wedding is supposed to be a celebration for the bride and groom. However, they must also consider their wedding guests’ expectations during planning.

And all that planning might be a bit stressful for a bride-to-be.

Luckily, the wedding shower gives brides-to-be a chance to relax and let their friends and/or family pamper them before their big day. The wedding shower also provides the bride-to-be with some quality time she can spend with friends and family.

And of course, she receives gifts!

It turns out that throwing a fun and memorable wedding shower doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming.

We have some ideas that should make things easier for the person (or people) who are organizing the busy bride-to-be’s wedding shower.

1) Put a guest list together

Traditionally, wedding shower guests include the bride-to-be’s closest friends, her female family members, and her fiancée’s close female relatives. The bride-to-be may also wish to include her close female coworkers and the groomsmen’s significant others on the guest list.

These days, it is not uncommon for the bride-to-be to choose a wedding shower which also includes her fiancée, his friends, and her male friends and relatives.

2) Send out the invitations

Whether you send out the invitations through regular mail or Evite, it’s easy to find cute and clever ones.

A good rule of thumb is to send wedding shower invitations out a month in advance, if possible. This gives your guests plenty of time to RSVP and add it to their calendars.

3) Choose a wedding shower theme

If you’re planning a wedding shower, one of the first things you should consider is selecting a theme. Once you have a theme picked out, then it’s easier to choose a menu, decorations, and games which go with it.

The bride-to-be’s personality and interests, as well as her friends, are factors that will most likely help you decide upon a theme. For example, many modern bride-to-be’s may shun the idea of the traditional “tea party” wedding shower.

Here are a few themes she may prefer instead:

  • A “Perfect Pairs” party

This idea works well for a couples shower, because it’s all about things that go together. Include a menu with the perfect food pairings and games that everyone can participate in.

  • A Cookbook wedding shower

This is a great theme for the bride-to-be and/or couple who loves to cook together. And who doesn’t love new cookbooks?

  • Around the clock wedding shower

Assign each guest a specific time slot. The guests will then select a gift for the couple that they can use during that time. For example, a gift of dinner dishes is appropriate for the 6:00PM dinner-hour timeframe.

  • Farm-to-table party

Does the bride-to-be frequent farmers markets or stores which specialize in organic, local fare? If so, she may really enjoy a wedding shower which includes lunch or dinner at a local farm-to-table restaurant.

  • Wine cellar wedding shower

Of course you should plan on serving wine and cheese at this wedding shower. As for gifts, one idea is to send each guest a wine tag with a specific occasion (like “first anniversary” or “first dinner party”). The guest can then select a special bottle of wine that the couple can use for the occasion.

4) Choosing a menu for the wedding shower

The theme you choose certainly plays a large part in the menu for the wedding shower. You can go with exotic or simple – the choice is yours. Remember that the bride-to-be’s tastes are the most important, so make sure the items suit her. It is also wise to make sure you are prepared for guests with food allergies and dietary restrictions as well.

5) Wedding Shower Games

The wedding shower is already going to be fun, of course, but planning a few games can make a good time even better!

6) Wedding shower gifts

This is the best part for the bride-to-be! It’s customary for each guest to bring a gift for her and/or the couple. Let guests know if couple has a registry they can select guests from, or if they should choose gifts based on the theme of the wedding shower.

Bonus: Wedding Shower planning dos and don’ts

Geneve McNally, who is a principal planner and co-owner of DreamGroup Productions Wedding & Event Planners in Vancouver, B.C., shares the following basics for organizing the perfect wedding shower:

  • Never ask attendees to pay.
  • The cost of the shower falls on the shoulders of the organizers.
  • If you decide to have a theme, keep it simple and elegant
  • Have a plan. Make sure you know what’s going to take place and when, and keep things moving along smoothly.
  • Inviting people to the bridal shower who won’t be invited to the wedding is a big faux pas. However, there is an exception to this rule – if the bride and groom are eloping, it is acceptable to throw a small shower with close family and friends
  • Make the bride-to be feel special. The main purpose of a wedding shower is to bring close friends and family together so they can celebrate the bride.
